We feel all girls are 'at risk':
- At risk of not believing in herself
- At risk of not achieving her dreams
- At risk of finding the wrong role models
- At risk of having low self esteem
- At risk of not learning about boundaries
- At risk of making poor choices
- At risk of not shining her own light
Without a strong belief in herself a young girl is always at risk for making decisions that compromise her true self and personal values.
Through learning positive self-esteem and self-worth, along with powerful life skills they learn that validating themselves is an internal job. Low self-esteem leads to withdrawal, poor choices and limiting beliefs which impacts choices around education, relationships and their future.
Stats That Hurt:
- The wrong path is only ONE choice away. Experts from the National Association for Self-Esteem hold that self-esteem directly impacts the lives of adolescent girls in the following four areas:
- Crime: Cost of incarcerating a juvenile is $35,000- $64,000/year – the amount of Arizona juveniles who came in contact with the system in 2010 were approximately 1,029,751 ages eight to seventeen in Arizona and 14,036 were female. (According to Arizona Supreme court).
- Pregnancy: Arizona's teen birth rate is the nation's third worse with approximately 14,000 per year - only about 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma. 15,038 girls under the age of 20 got pregnant in 2010, and 23% of those girls had been pregnant before (According to Arizona Department of Health Services).
- Dropping out: Arizona has one of the worst U.S. dropout rates with 13,891 drop outs in 2010 and 5,720 of those were females. (According to the Arizona Department of Education).
- Eating Disorders: Only 56% of girls like their self-image. 43% report onset of a eating disorder between ages of 16 and 20. Anorexia is the third most common chronic illness among adolescents. 95% of those who have eating disorders are between the ages of 12 and 25 (according to the National Association of Anorexia and Disorders).
Our Programs:
Our educational programs are specifically designed for girls ages 13-18.Through our educational events like workshops and seminars, and our collateral like upcoming videos and workbooks, Girls Rule! educates and inspires young women to seek their own healthy, successful future.
Traditional Teen Program - Shine Brightly- The Shine Brightly program recognizes that regardless of social class, grades, activity/sports/clubs involvement, popularity, etc a young girl is always at risk for making decisions that compromise her true self and personal values. Our programming focuses on self esteem, wise choice making, role models, and future mapping.
Imprisoned Teen Program – The Interruption - This program is called The Interruption, which consists of live programs and a workbook. Both are created to inspire and empower young women who are incarcerated. The program will be piloted in 3 heavily incarcerated states; Arizona, North Carolina and Tennessee. This program focuses on empowerment through new ways of knowing and loving themselves. By redefining themselves and breaking the cycles of the past they build a new concept of who they are (brilliant, beautiful, and bold), they remove the obstacle of the past and focus on creating a new future. Through the workbook they get tangible tips, advice and resources to help build a productive and healthy future.
